Hidden Noise

A series of concerts with new music for the pipe organ, imagined, curated and performed by Cory Arcangel & Hampus Lindwall

Hidden Noise is a series of organ concerts with the goal of generating new repertoire for the pipe organ. The title is borrowed from Marcel Duchamp’s piece with the same name, on which he collaborated with his friend Walter Arensberg and asked him to insert a secret object inside a ball of string which Duchamp then clamped shut between two screwed metal plates. When shaked, the hidden object rattles, and makes a secret noise ;-)

Since 2018, we have comissioned music from no less than 12 artists and world premiered around 20 pieces.

In Terms and Conditions we highlighted our own compositions as part of a larger organ night that included performances by Silvan Meshke, Gamut Inc. and Markus Hinz, who had generously of invited us. The event was co-organized by the Julia Stoschek Collection. Cory premiered a full scale concert version of Chord Memory whearas Hampus played multiple works from the last couple of years.

So this time we got displaced again, but not by the Pope, by Covid-19! And we ended up in our iPhones.... However, this turned out to become a small performance by itself, with us live presentations by texting!

Fun fact: We obviously have the best documentation from this event, since it’s the very video from the performance!

THEY TOLD ME THERE WOULD BE TEA
2019

Following our concert in Paris, Helen Nisbet invited us to do something similar at Art Night London 2019. This time we had the possibility to invite eight artists to concieve new works for the organ. Some artists had already worked with the organ before, but we also had new crazy stuff like Haroon Mirza who built a special robot to play the keys!!

Fun fact: Cory made his debute performance as an organist, playing Charlemagne Palestine’s piece, giving Hampus a well needed break during the 4 hours performance!

A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST
2018

Organized with the help of Thaddeus Ropac during FIAC 2018, this first round of organ nights came out around the world premiere of Alle Fugler, a piece Cory wrote for Hampus. To complete the program, Hampus made an organ arrangement of Sweet 16, as well as performed pieces by Marcel Duchamp & Phill Niblock.

Fun fact: This concert was supposed to be held in Notre-Dame, but due to a last minute visit by the Pope it was displaced to a church near the Ropac gallery space.
